Chapter 21
Morgan had tried to press Dylan for more information, but he wasn't forthcoming. He didn't stay much longer after Meredith disappeared, and it left Morgan to ponder her memories.
It was Gabe who showed up at lunch instead of Dylan and, although Morgan was happy to see the younger man, she missed her lunchtime with Dylan. She'd gotten in the habit of spending a quiet meal with the older man, talking about her aunt, or about life in general. He was her connection to Meredith, knowing her both as a friend and Morgan was guessing, as a lover.
The lunch with Gabe was full of laughter and jokes, and she had needed that. As he was leaving, the post-woman showed up with a large package, and Gabe had helped the woman carry it up the porch stairs. Then he had taken it and put it in Morgan's workroom for her and watched as she happily unwrapped it.
Inside was a stack of old books. On top was a note from a repeat customer pleading Morgan to put all her attention on the books; they were his wifeâs birthday gift. It didn't take much for Gabe to see Morgan was eager to start on the project, and he'd left shortly after. It thrilled Morgan to see the box, to be honest, as she was feeling like she was losing connection with her old life.
The island and her new life were so different from what she was used to. She carefully unwrapped the books, placing them on the worktable she had set up. Then she shooed Misty out of the room before the kitten could get into any trouble and started exploring the work that needed her attention. She lost hours working, and before she knew it, she had to turn on the lights in the room to accommodate for the darkening sky outside.
Morgan was occupied with the books for the next three days. Gabriel and Dylan both popped in to check on her but gave her the space she needed.
By the third day, Morgan had finished her task, pleased with the results. She boxed the books up carefully and arranged for someone from the post office to come and pick them up for her. Walking the box out to the porch where they would be picked up, she looked out towards the ocean and saw Dylan walking, his head held low.
She realized with a start that she had not really seen much of him other than the occasional meal. She'd been so wrapped up in her work that she hadn't given it a second thought, but now she remembered seeing him walk the beach from the windows. She wondered if he felt closer to her aunt as he walked the shore. Morgan knew she did; she always felt more complete when she was near the water.
Meredith had made an appearance once or twice over the last few days, as if she was checking in to make sure her niece was okay, but she didn't stay.
